The interior of the elegant Greek-inspired cocktail bar - Beta, above Peter Conistis's Alpha restaurant at Sydney's historic Hellenic Club, features exposed brick and an ancient-Greek vibe. Beta can be found up an unmarked staircase leading from Alpha restaurant below.

The 200-seater bar fills the historic upper floor of the building, with a soaring design by Paul Papadopoulos from DS17, making the most of the heritage windows and arches of the space. There are blue, grey and wood tones from the oversized double-seater sofa seats, to the banquette under the ceiling-height windows. A central eyeline straight to the bar (from anywhere in the long space) makes the cavernous area still feel cosy. Paul Papadopoulos and the DS17 team represent Greece in the details: it’s in the the arched walkways with rustic brick architraves, chair frames, marble pillar-like Fulcrum candle holders, brass Fulcrum pendant lighting and On The Rock glassware by Lee Broom, supplied by Design Nation.

Alpha chef Peter Conistis has written the menu at the Beta cocktail bar, with dishes done in his style of modern Greek food, including oysters with cucumber, green olives, rose and sumac and slow-cooked lamb pastries with spice-roasted sweetbread “popcorn”, eggplant and pomegranate with a refined cocktail to match.
