The Crux & Co, designed by Architects EAT, is a 270sqm café and patisserie situated on the ground floor of The Emerald Apartments in South Melbourne.

The design of the café has been focused around the customer experience, and the palette of the interior and exterior is a balance between raw and refined. The interior design references the 1960s with rounded edges on tables and cabinets, and a colour palette of baby blue and navy. A cork ceiling softens peak-time acoustics. The large marble counter and copper finishes complete a clean and polished look.

Unassuming from the outside, The Crux & Co’s long interior space seats 110 people all the way through to the commercial-sized bakery at the back.

DOLL STEEL armchairs, designed by Emilio Nanni for Billiani, feature natural beech plywood and black steel frames that complement the interior beautifully.

There’s a strong French influence in the menu, but with a culturally diverse team back of house, the customers will find culinary traditions from South America, Italy and Korea making appearances as well.

This is an Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) 2017 shortlisted project under the Hospitality category. Award-winners will be announced on 24 November 2017.

Design Nation is a proud sponsor of IDEA 2017.
